About Data Sprint

At Royal Danish Library's Data Sprint, you can delve into large amounts of data and use digital methods to gain new knowledge.

Are you an undergraduate or graduate student in the humanities or social sciences, or do you work at a university, a library, a record office or local history archive? Do you work with digitized cultural heritage data and find it challenging to prepare it for analysis?

Join our upcoming Data Sprint designed specifically for you!

Data sprint overview

When working with digitized cultural heritage data, you often encounter information from various sources and formats. This data might originate from printed books, library catalogues, historical records, databases, or other sources. A common challenge is that this data is often unstructured, inconsistent, or has different characteristics, thus making it difficult to use directly for analysis.

What you will learn

In this Data Sprint, we will focus on how to process, systematize, restructure, and prepare cultural heritage data for analysis and visualization. You will gain hands-on experience with various methods and software tools that can assist you in this process. Some of the tools we will cover include:

  • OpenRefine: A powerful tool for cleaning and transforming data.
  • Python (Pandas) and/or R: Well-known programming languages and with libraries for data manipulation and analysis.
  • Orange: Data mining software which provides a range of data visualization and analysis tools.

Data sprint goals

By the end of the data sprint, you will be equipped with the skills to:

  • Clean and fix digital data.
  • Systematize and restructure data for better usability.
  • Prepare data for insightful analysis and compelling visualizations.

Who should attend?

This data sprint is ideal for students in the humanities and social sciences who are interested in learning how to handle and analyse digitized cultural heritage data effectively.
